William Francis Tanner ist das Oberhaupt der Familie Tanner. Zusammen mit seiner Frau Kate und seinen drei Kindern Lynn, Brian und Eric wohnt er in einem kleinen, einfachem beigen Haus. Willie und Kate wohnten bei Lynns Geburt am Rande von Bakersfield und zogen erst danach in die 167 Hamdale Avenue, Los Angeles um.

In seiner Jugend war Willie vier Jahre lang bei den Pfadfindern. Dort bekam er 11 Abzeichen und eine Auszeichnung für Brandverhütung. Dies hat ihm im Leben mit ALF weit mehr gebracht, als ihm dass im Traum je eingefallen wäre.

Während seiner Schulzeit erhielt Willie zudem zahlreiche Auszeichnungen und Medallien für hervorragende Leistungen vor allem im Mathe- und im Physik-Club.

Mit 17 Jahren riss er von zu Hause aus und durchquerte die USA als Tramper mit Güterzügen, verdiente Geld mit Gelegenheitsjobs und lernte so in einem Restaurant in Colorado Linda Evans kennen. Er ging eine Weile mit ihr, doch dann trennten sie sich wieder wegen unterschiedlicher Vorstellung die Zukunft betreffend.

Danach studierte Willie Sozialwissenschaft am Amhurst College in Massachussetts. und war in einer linken Hippie-Bewegung unter Dexter Lurch IV. alias "Schnute" engagiert.

Seit seinem Abschluss den er mit einer Auszeichnung bestand arbeitet er als Sozialarbeiter beim Sozialamt von Los Angeles County.

Vor Kate hatte Willie einige Freundinnen, obwohl er sich nicht immer traute, diese anzusprechen. So kam es auch, dass er z.B. für Mascha Schenke schwärmte, doch nie mit ihr zusammen kam, da sie vorher nach Toledo umzog. Mit der Beziehung zu Kate gab es auch ein paar Schwierigkeiten, da Willie zuvor noch mit Kates Schwester ging.

Bezüglich Willies Geschwister gibt es widersprüchliche Aussagen (siehe Fehler). Es steht jedoch fest, dass er auf jeden Fall einen Bruder namens Neal hat. Diese taucht auch ab und zu in der Serie auf.

Seine Hobbies sind Lesen, Musik, Klavierspielen - und kaputte Sachen reparieren, seit ALF bei den Tanners lebt.

Willie war wahrscheinlich, bevor ALF in die Garage krachte, das "echte" Familienoberhaupt. Mit seiner gutmütigen Art jedoch war er das gefundene Fressen für ALF, und so dominiert der Außerirdische die Familie.

Willie ist sehr gebildet, verantwortungsbewusst und vielleicht ein bisschen schüchtern - doch letztes ist er immer wieder gezwungen, zu überwinden, um sich selbst, seine Familie oder ALF aus einer brenzligen Lage zu befreien, in die ALF sie gebracht hat.

ALFs dauernde Missetaten veranlassen den ansonsten lammfrommen Willie zu lautstarken Wutausbrüchen, die jedoch meistens sehr schnell wieder verraucht sind.

ALF schafft es immer wieder, Willie um den Finger zu wickeln und für seine Zwecke einzuspannen.

Willie stottert ein wenig, besonders wenn er nervös ist.

Willie hat zu allen Nachbarn ein eher distanziertes Verhältnis.
